Our vintage ABU reels are costly. Treated well, they become priceless. Heirlooms that we can pass on generation to generation. Even then, we don’t just want to admire them; we want to actually experience them in the field. That’s what a reel is for. With this in mind, I thought a maintenance quick start guide might be helpful. Let’s dive in! 👇🏼

Supplies

🧰 Tool / Supply 🎯 Use
🧻 Clean, lint-free rag Wipe off debris & residual moisture after rinsing
💧 Spray bottle with fresh water Gently rinse reel body to flush away grit and salt (if any) without driving water into seals
🔧 Small screwdriver set Remove handles, side plates & fasteners for detailed oiling or annual teardown
🛢️ Reel oil Lubricate bearings, shafts & moving joints for smooth operation
🧴 Light reel grease Protect gears and metal surfaces during annual deep-clean and reassembly
💨 Compressed air (optional) Blow out trapped debris from tight crevices and bail mechanisms
🧳 Reel covers or original cases Shield reels from dust, knocks and UV when storing or transporting
💎 Silica-gel / moisture packs Absorb humidity in your reel bag or storage box to prevent corrosion

1. Immediate Post-Trip Rinse & Wipe 💧🧻

  1. Rinse the reel body with a light spray of fresh water (avoid high-pressure streams so you don’t force water into seals).
  2. Wipe immediately with the rag’s dry side to remove grit, salt, and moisture.

3. Spool-Shaft Lubrication💧

  1. Unscrew and lift off the spool—watch for thin washers.
  2. Spin the reel to raise the shaft.
  3. Apply one small drop of oil directly on the shaft.
  4. Reel slowly to distribute oil; check under the spool for debris.

4. Bail & Line-Roller Service 🌀🛠️

  1. Oil each bail hinge/joint (just a drop).
  2. Open/close the bail several times to work in oil.
  3. Remove the line-roller bearing if you can, oil its tiny gap, then reinstall.
  4. Inspect the roller surface for corrosion or dirt.
